The President of the Government, Pere Aragonès, spoke on Wednesday at the headquarters of the European Parliament in Brussels during the conference 'Ensuring the right to self-determination within the EU,' where he stated, "Today they say that a referendum is impossible, but through perseverance and democratic empowerment, it will become achievable".

The conference was organised by the Self-Determination Caucus, the group of Members of the European Parliament advocating for a European mechanism of clarity so that the non-state nations of the EU can exercise self-determination.

"We are here to build a shared future for all the peoples and nations of Europe, for the challenges we face" and to"strengthen the European project" said the President at the close of the conference, in which the Basque president, Iñigo Urkullu, and the President of the Executive Council of Corsica, Gilles Simeoni, also took part.

Aragonès reaffirmed that "Catalonia will always be an ally in the challenges shared with other European peoples and nations" and he spoke of the sovereignty conflict Catalonia has with Spain, declaring that "democracy is always the solution" and that the people of Catalonia"have always expressed themselves in order to resolve this conflict through democracy".

With regard to the future and more specifically the future of Europe, the head of the executive commented that "the future can only be built through more democracy" pointing out that "Catalans have always advocated for democracy and for the exercise of our sovereignty through democracy, as we showed on 1 October 2017 and will do so again today".

The Self-Determination Caucus

The Self-Determination Caucus is a group of Members of the European Parliament from different parties that was created in 2021 to defend and promote the right to self-determination of the stateless peoples and nations of the EU. The aim of this group is to promote dialogue, democracy, and the right of European nations to freely decide their future and advocate for the creation of a European Democratic Mechanism for Clarity.

The event also featured several experts who have developed the proposal for a regulation of the EU to incorporate an instrument to ensure non-discrimination based on nationality regarding European citizenship in cases of democratic exercise of the right to self-determination in the EU. Among these experts is Marc Sanjaume, the president of the Academic Council for the Clarity Agreement.

El president de la Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, ha intervingut aquest dimecres a la seu del Parlament Europeu a Brussel·les en la conferència ‘Ensuring the right of self-determination within the EU’ on ha afirmat que “avui ens diuen que és impossible un referèndum, estic convençut que la història, la convicció, la perseverança i l'enfortiment democràtic a les aliances faran que sigui possible”.

La conferència del Caucus per l’autodeterminació, el grup d’eurodiputats que planteja un mecanisme europeu de claredat perquè les nacions sense estat de la UE puguin exercir l’autodeterminació.

“Som aquí per construir un futur compartit per tots els pobles i nacions d'Europa, pels reptes que tenim” i per “enfortir el projecte europeu” ha dit el president en la clausura de la conferència, en que també han intervingut el lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, i el president del Consell Executiu de Còrsega, Gilles Simeoni.

Aragonès ha reafirmat que “Catalunya sempre serà un aliat dels reptes compartits amb els altres pobles i nacions europees” i ha parlat del conflicte de sobirania que Catalunya té amb l’Estat espanyol declarant que “la democràcia sempre és la solució” i que el poble de Catalunya “sempre s'ha expressat per resoldre aquest conflicte mitjançant la democràcia”.

Pel que fa el futur, i més concretament el futur d’Europa, el cap de l’Executiu ha comentat que “el futur només es construirà amb més democràcia” apuntant que “els catalans sempre hem apostat per la democràcia i per l’exercici de la nostra voluntat de sobirania. Ho vam fer l'1 d'octubre del 2017 i ho tornarem a fer avui”.

Caucus per l’autodeterminació

El Caucus per l’autodeterminació és un grup de diputats del Parlament Europeu de diferents partits, creat el 2021 per defensar i promoure el dret a l’autodeterminació dels pobles i nacions sense estat de la UE. L’objectiu d’aquest grup és promoure el diàleg, la democràcia i el dret de les nacions europees a decidir lliurement el seu futur i advocar per la creació d’un Mecanisme Europeu Democràtic de Claredat.

A l’acte, també han participat diversos experts que han elaborat la proposta de reglament de la UE per incorporar un instrument per assegurar la no discriminació en base a la nacionalitat de la ciutadania europea en casos d’exercici democràtic del dret a l’autodeterminació. Entre aquests experts, es troba el president del Consell Acadèmic per a l’Acord de Claredat, Marc Sanjaume.
