The President of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès i Garcia, met this Wednesday and Thursday with the European Commissioners for Justice, Didier Reynders, and for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, to continue strengthening the collaboration between the Government of Catalonia and the European Commission.
Thursday, President Aragonès received the European Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, at the Palau de la Generalitat, with whom he discussed issues related to social policies and the fight against inequality.
At the meeting, Aragonès explained some of the initiatives being promoted by the Government of the Generalitat to tackle social transformation and the demographic challenge. At the same time, he reaffirmed the Catalan Government’s commitment to the European Pillar of Social Rights, which establishes a series of principles and actions to move towards a strong, fair, inclusive and equal opportunities social Europe.
For the Catalan Government, the cooperation of European institutions with governments such as that of Catalonia in the implementation and development of social policies is essential. The Generalitat has powers in issues such as education, health, social rights, childhood, housing and active employment policies, among others, and is therefore a key actor in guaranteeing the effectiveness of the initiatives carried out in these areas.
In addition, the President outlined the reindustrialisation strategy being carried out by the Catalan Government, highlighting the National Agreement for Industry reached with all sectors and social stakeholders in the country, and the opportunity provided by European funds for the creation of jobs with fair conditions.
Meeting with the Commissioner for Justice
Yesterday, Wednesday, the President met with Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders. Aragonès and the European Justice Commissioner had already met a year ago in Brussels to address the problem of cybersecurity and espionage with Pegasus spyware. At yesterday’s meeting they spoke again about this issue, and the President explained the judicial developments in the case, such as the admission of the complaint filed by Aragonès and the commencement of investigations by the judge.
The President conveyed the willingness of the Government of the Generalitat to collaborate in eradicating these practices and defended the need for European governments and institutions to cooperate in order to protect the fundamental rights of citizens in the face of cyber espionage.
They also discussed the official status of Catalan in the EU.
Relationship with the European Commission
These meetings are part of the normalisation of institutional relations between the Government of Catalonia and the European institutions.
Since the beginning of this term of office, one of the priorities of the President’s foreign action has been to resume meetings and cooperation with the European Commission. Last year, he received the Vice-President of the Commission, Margaritis Schinas, at the Palau de la Generalitat, and met in Brussels with Commissioner Reynders and the Commissioner for the Internal Market, Thierry Breton.
He also met the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, at an event in Barcelona.
El president de la Generalitat, Pere Aragonès i Garcia, s’ha reunit aquest dimecres i dijous amb els comissaris europeus de Justícia, Didier Reynders, i de Treball i Drets Socials, Nicolas Schmit, per continuar reforçant la col·laboració entre el Govern de Catalunya amb la Comissió Europea.
Aquest dijous, el cap de l’Executiu ha rebut al Palau de la Generalitat al comissari europeu de Treball i Drets Socials, Nicolas Schmit, amb qui ha abordat qüestions relacionades amb les polítiques socials i la lluita contra les desigualtats.
En la trobada, el cap de l’Executiu ha explicat algunes de les iniciatives que impulsa el Govern de la Generalitat per afrontar la transformació social i el repte demogràfic. A l’hora, ha refermat el compromís del Govern amb el Pilar Europeu de Drets Socials, que estableix una sèrie de principis i accions per avançar cap a una Europa social forta, justa, inclusiva i amb igualtat d’oportunitats.
Pel Govern, és fonamental la cooperació de les institucions europees amb governs com el de Catalunya en l’aplicació i desenvolupament de les polítiques socials. La Generalitat té competències en qüestions com educació, salut, drets socials, infància, habitatge o polítiques actives d’ocupació, entre d’altres, i per tant, és un actor clau per garantir l’efectivitat de les iniciatives que es duen a terme en aquests àmbits.
A més, el president ha exposar l’estratègia de reindustrialització que està duent a terme el Govern, posant en valor el Pacte Nacional per la Indústria acordat amb tots els sectors i agents socials del país, i l’oportunitat que suposen els fons europeus per la creació de llocs de treball amb condicions justes.
Reunió amb el comissari de Justícia
Ahir, dimecres, el president es va reunir amb el comissari de Justícia, Didier Reynders. Aragonès i el responsable europeu de Justícia ja s’havien reunit fa un any a Brussel·les per abordar el problema de la ciberseguretat i l’espionatge amb el programa Pegasus. I en la trobada d’aquest dimecres van tornar a parlar sobre aquesta qüestió i el president li va explicar les novetats judicials del cas, com l’admissió a tràmit de la querella que va presentar Aragonès i l’inici de les investigacions per part del jutge.
El president li va traslladar la disposició del Govern de la Generalitat a col·laborar per eradicar aquestes pràctiques i va defensar la necessitat que els governs i les institucions europees cooperin per protegir els drets fonamentals de la ciutadania davant el ciberespionatge.
A més, durant la reunió van parlar sobre l’oficialitat del català a la Unió Europea.
Relació amb la Comissió Europea
Aquestes trobades formen part de la normalització de les relacions institucionals entre el Govern de Catalunya i les institucions europees.
Des de l’inici de la legislatura, una de les prioritats de l'acció exterior del president ha estat la represa de les trobades i la col·laboració amb la Comissió Europea. L’any passat ja va rebre al Palau de la Generalitat al vicepresident de la Comissió, Margaritis Schinas, i es va reunir a Brussel·les amb el comissari Reynders i amb el comissari de Mercat Interior, Thierry Breton.
A més, es va trobar amb la presidenta de la Comissió Europea, Ursula von der Leyen, en un acte a Barcelona.
