The President of the Government of Catalonia, Pere Aragonès i Garcia, spoke this morning of the country’s commitment to Europe and assured that “Catalonia must do her bit for the great European challenges”, because “Europe’s crucial moment is also ours”. In this regard, Aragonès highlighted Catalonia’s role, through its industrial and innovation ecosystem, in helping to make Europe “a much more competitive economy, one that tackles climate change, fights against inequality and guarantees a truly unique area of security and freedom in the world”.
Aragonès delivered this message at the opening ceremony of the conference “EU investments in strategic projects: An outlook from Catalonia”, which was also attended by the Catalan Minister for Foreign Action and European Union, Meritxell Serret i Aleu.
The event, which is being jointly organised today by theCatalan Governmentand theEuropean Commission in Barcelona -coinciding with the new European political cycle-, provided an opportunity to present the most emblematic innovation projects developed in Catalonia that are contributing to major European transformations, such as the ALBA Synchrotron, the MareNostrum Supercomputer, the Hydrogen Valley,QuantumCAT, or the Centre for Advanced and Emerging Therapies of Catalonia.
The President stressed that Catalonia has much to contribute to Europe in a variety of strategic areas, from semiconductors to life sciences, energy and decarbonisation, where “we have managed to attract projects, and we will attract many more”. He stressed the need to continue to “commit to improving the competitiveness of the Catalan economy and to contributing to the competitiveness of the European economy”, with the aim of generating “shared prosperity, which improves the living conditions of Europeans as a whole”.
"The European Union has represented for Catalonia and for all the peoples of Europe the hope of facing the challenges of the future together, of doing so united and pooling the assets we have", he said. For this reason, he insisted that it is necessary to reach “major social agreements that reduce inequality and agreements in the area of collective bargaining and the improvement of wage and working conditions in the Union as a whole and, particularly, in Catalonia”.
Throughout his speech, Aragonès also highlighted the large accumulation of research infrastructures, research centres, hospitals, universities and research and advanced technology companies in Catalonia, which he described as a “unique ecosystem in Europe that allows us to enter a virtuous cycle”. "Today, Catalonia, and especially its research and knowledge centres, as well as its productive fabric, stands out when it comes to taking advantage of European Union initiatives and funds and making the most of them", he said.
During the event, the head of the Executive also insisted on the good relations that currently exist with Europe, which has contributed to the fact that the European Commission “has not only reopened its doors in Catalonia, but we are also working together and high-level meetings between ministers and commissioners are now a regular occurrence”.
The opening of the conference was also attended by the Secretary of State for Industry, Rebeca Torró Soler, and the President of the Board of Trustees of the Fundació de Gestió Sanitària del Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Xavier Prats i Monné. Enrico Letta, former Italian prime minister and responsible for the report on the future of the European single market, Much more than a market, then gave the keynote speech.
However, the bulk of the conference was the content of three round tables: on green and industrial transformation, the new digital age at the service of people, and health and life sciences. Each of them presented the different projects that stand out for their cutting-edge and innovative nature and opened a discussion on the challenges to be overcome in the corresponding sectors. A report of conclusions from all the discussions will be drawn up and sent to the European Commission.
El president de la Generalitat, Pere Aragonès i Garcia, ha reiterat aquest matí el compromís del país amb Europa i ha assegurat que “Catalunya ha d’aportar el seu granet de sorra als grans reptes europeus”, perquè “el moment crucial d’Europa també és el nostre”. En aquest sentit, Aragonès ha posat en valor el rol de Catalunya, a través del seu ecosistema industrial i d’innovació, per contribuir a fer que Europa sigui “una economia molt més competitiva, que faci front al canvi climàtic, que lluiti contra les desigualtats i que permeti garantir un espai de seguretat i de llibertat realment únic al món”.
El cap de l’Executiu ha llençat aquest missatge en l’acte d’obertura de la conferència “Inversions de la Unió Europea en projectes estratègics: una visió des de Catalunya”, que avui organitzen conjuntament el Govern i la Comissió Europea, coincidint amb el nou cicle polític europeu. L’esdeveniment ha permès presentar els projectes més emblemàtics d’innovació desenvolupats a Catalunya i que contribueixen a les grans transformacions europees, com el Sincrotró ALBA, el Superordinador MareNostrum, la Vall de l’Hidrogen, la Quàntica o el Centre de Teràpies Avançades i Emergents de Catalunya.
El president ha subratllat que Catalunya té molt a aportar a Europa en àmbits estratègics diversos, des dels semiconductors fins a les ciències de la vida, l’energia o la descarbonització, on “hem aconseguit atraure projectes i n’atraurem encara molts més”. I ha reivindicat la necessitat que se segueixi “apostant per la millora de la competitivitat de l’economia catalana i la contribució a la competitivitat de l’economia europea”, amb l’objectiu de generar una “prosperitat compartida, que millori les condicions de vida del conjunt d’europeus”.
“La Unió Europea ha representat per a Catalunya, i per a tots els pobles d’Europa, l’esperança d’afrontar els reptes de futur de manera conjunta, de fer-ho units i posant en comú els actius que tenim”, ha afirmat. Per això, ha insistit que cal assolir “grans acords socials que disminueixin la desigualtat i acords en l'àmbit de la negociació col·lectiva i la millora de les condicions salarials i laborals en el conjunt de la Unió i, particularment, a Catalunya”.
Al llarg de la seva intervenció, Aragonès també ha posat en relleu la gran acumulació d’infraestructures de recerca, centres d’investigació, hospitals, universitat i empreses de recerca i tecnologies avançades que hi ha a Catalunya, i ho ha definit com un “ecosistema únic a Europa que ens permet entrar en un cercle virtuós”. “Avui, Catalunya, i especialment els seus centres de recerca i coneixement, i també el seu teixit productiu, excel·leix a l'hora d'aprofitar i donar el màxim rendiment a les iniciatives i al fons de la Unió Europea”, ha dit.
En el marc de l’acte, el cap de l’Executiu també ha insistit en les bones relacions que hi ha actualment amb Europa i què han contribuït a fer que “la Comissió Europea, no només ha tornat a obrir les portes a Catalunya, sinó que treballem conjuntament i les reunions d'alt nivell de conselleres i consellers amb comissàries i comissàries són ja una tònica habitual”.
A la inauguració de la conferència també hi han assistit la consellera d’Acció Exterior i Unió Europea, Meritxell Serret i Aleu; la secretària d’Estat d’Indústria, Rebeca Torró Soler; i el president del Patronat de la Fundació de Gestió Sanitària de l’Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, Xavier Prats i Monné. Seguidament, l’exprimer ministre italià i responsable de l’informe sobre el futur del Mercat Únic europeu “Much more than a market”, Enrico Letta, ha fet la ponència inaugural.
El gruix de la conferència serà, però, el contingut de tres taules rodones: sobre la transformació verda i industrial; la nova era digital al servei de les persones; i la salut i les ciències de la vida. En cadascuna d’elles es presentaran els diferents projectes que destaquen pel seu caràcter punter i innovador, i es debatrà sobre els esculls a superar en els seus sectors. De tota la conversa s’elaborarà un informe de conclusions que s’enviarà a la Comissió Europea.
